Go Teach English

As I’ve noted too many times to count, leaving home to experience the world is one of the most eye-opening, personal-growth endeavors a person could ever decide to do.  If you’re like me, and you know you can’t be happy until you pack up and get on a plane to who-knows-where, I’d like to offer some advice, direction, a swift kick in the pants...whatever you want to call it.

HOW TO GET STARTED TEACHING ENGLISH

  •   Many (if not all) foreign countries require that a non-native English teacher have a 4 year Bachelors degree of some sort.  The area of discipline does not matter.  A degree in English will generally get you a higher salary, but it is not required.
  • I highly recommend obtaining a TESOL certificate.  TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification is not always necessary to securing employment or obtaining a teaching visa, but the information, training, and experience you will receive is invaluable.  Unless you prefer to undertake professional activities (i.e. a job) without being prepared, trained, and just generally knowing what the heck you’re doing, skip this part.  But, if you’re like me, and you’d rather not have that adrenaline rush (panicked, I-just-crapped-my-pants feeling), then take the time for TESOL certification.

I recommend these guys...

Tell them I sent you.

It probably won’t get you anywhere, but still.

  • Where do you find a job?  There are thousands upon thousands of English teaching jobs around the world.  In my experience, South Korea was the most convenient.  Search out ESL or TESOL job boards online.  I used...

             www.eslcafe.com

This site seems to be the go-to resource for all things ESL.  Simply search the country you prefer and respond to the job openings.  In most cases, the job is posted by a recruiting agency, hired by the schools to find teachers.  In the case of South Korea I received a return email within hours, an interview via Skype in 2 days, and a job offer in 4.  It may not happen that quickly, but it can, and does.
  •     There are several documents you will need to get in order...
                    Passport
College degree (the actual paper copy)
                    State Criminal Background Check

This will get you started.  It's really an easy process, so don't hesitate any longer.  Drop me a line...I'd love to get you more information.
